Spain is after England the country with the highest golf course density in Europe. Especially the Costa del Sol is famous for its numerous and world-class courses. One of the reasons why golf lovers keep on coming back is the overall mild climate that allows playing not only in summer but also during the winter months. Calahonda is one of the most popular golf centres on the "Costa del Golf".

The region became popular during the eighties as a winter golf resort which had as a result that within six years (between 1985 and 1991) a total of 17 new golf courses were built.
Back then there were 30 golf courses located on a stretch of 50 miles (about 80 km).
Due to the wide range of top notch golf courses in such as small area and of course the warm climate that allows you to play throughout the year; the resort became the most popular destination for Northern European golfers.

In 1997 Valderrama was host to the Ryder Cup which gave the area international acknowledgment and recognition and therefore another increase in golf players from around the globe.

After the cup the region built even more golf courses as the interest and reservations - especially for the millennium - for golf courses grew significantly.

Calahonda Golf Course Miraflores:

The Miraflores golf course is located near Mijas Costa and set on gentle hills from which golfers can enjoy the Mediterranean landscape. Nestled within mountains and offering water hazards, this course is definitely a must visit. The course is not the easiest but still very enjoyable for those with a little less experience.Players on a higher level can be guaranteed a challenge!

Calahonda Golf Course La Cala Resort:

At the La Cala Resort there is a world-class golf course and a club house. There is a 18 hole golf course fond in the north and in the south of the resort. In addition to the amazing natural surroundings that can be admired golfers will also be able to show their abilities and knowledge.

Calahonda Golf Course La Siesta:

Opened in 1990 and designed by Enrique Canales, the La Siesta golf course offers 9 holes, par 3. It is located on gentle hills and therefore offers stunning views of the area. The course is surrounded by nature, offers a private atmosphere and welcomes visitors.

Calahonda Golf Course Santa Maria:

Golfers who prefer to play in a more traditional and “old fashioned” club have found the ideal place. The course is set on 1.000 acres and provides 18 holes and a club house in Calahonda. The grounds will soon feature a new real estate development which will be surrounded by pine trees and cork oak woodland.

Calahonda Golf Course Cabopino:

In the Cabopino golf course you will find not only well designed lakes which offer a challenge in accuracy but also wooded and undulated areas. As in most courses in the region you will be able to admire spectacular views from nearly every spot. Traffic and tourism are far away when playing here which makes the course even more attractive.

Golf aan de Costa del Sol

Añoreta Golf Course

1. Añoreta

Añoreta golf club was the second golf course built east of Malaga. The course is 18 holes, par 72, and is 5976 metres from the white tees. There are some difficult holes on this course and also some spectacular scenery as well as sea and coastal views to enjoy.

Although the fairways and greens are generally wide, there are water hazards on eleven holes.

2. Guadalhorce

Guadalhorce Golf Club was inaugurated in 1990. The par 72 course was designed by Kosti Kuronen and it is divided into two distinct halves.

The front nine is English parkland and the back nine more Spanish with lakes and exotic plants and trees.

The greens are generally large and well kept with some shared by two holes. Guadalhorce has a magnificent 18th century clubhouse overlooking the course and is a very relaxing place to be after your round of golf.

3. Parador

Parador Golf Course is the oldest golf course in Andalucia and is a fairly flat mixture of parkland and links style holes featuring some seawater lagoons.

This par 72 course is fairly long-with long par threes and fours and reasanable par fives. It is an easy walk, being rather flat, and has wide fairways lined with mature pines, olive trees and palm trees.

Since its beginning an extra 9 holes have been added giving golfers the option of three different courses to play.

Lauro Golf Course

4. Lauro

Lauro Golf Course is set in beautiful parkland of pine, citrus and olive trees - testing a golfer’s accuracy. It has beautiful views of the Mijas Mountains and valleys.

The course is 300m above sea level and adjoins the protected forest area of Sierra de Mijas.

The original eighteen holes of this parkland course are set on a plateau and have a number of water hazards and deceptive holes. There are 27 holes, all at par 72.

5. Torrequebrada

One of the coast’s most popular courses, Torrequebrada is a real challenge that low handicappers will love. There are numerous fairway bunkers strategically placed and players will find the well guarded greens very challenging.

The fairways are well manicured and lined by over 100 species of trees, with numerous bunkers and water hazards strategically placed and eight doglegs, accuracy of the tee is a must. The course (par 72) has stunning sea views and is very popular with visitors.

6. Alhaurin

Alhaurin is a unique club, in that it has three golf courses - an 18 hole par 72 course, a nine hole par 3 course bordering a beautiful lake, and an 18 hole junior course (children may play only when accompanied by an adult).

The par 72 course is of international quality with challenging holes, lush green fairways and greens set amongst pine woods. It is a beautiful course, set in and around the mountains with amazing views of the mountains to the north and of Africa across the Mediterranean to the South

Mijas Golf Course - Los Olivios

7. Mijas

Mijas has two of the most popular golf courses on the Costa Del Sol - Los Lagos (lakes) is the longer with plenty of water hazards while Los Olivos (olives) offers more variety in its holes and olive trees.

Los Lagos is the older, longer and wider course which as its name suggests has several water hazards. Despite being par 71 it is one of the longest courses on the coast.

Los Olivos is shorter, tighter with the undulating fairways lined by olive trees, being a par 70 course.

Santana Golf Course

8. Santana

Santana Golf is a spectacular golf course, both for its design and its location. It is situated between two rivers, with a creek passing through, the golf course provides the sensation of being in an absolutely natural environment - just a few hundred metres from the sea and the main highway.

The greens are large and well kept and the strategically placed paths between the avocado trees add to the character of this par 72 course.    

9. La Cala

La Cala Golf has three courses. The North Course (par 73) is a championship layout, and pros find it a real challenge from the white tees, but its wide fairways and different tee positions make it pleasant for all levels of golfers.

The South Course (par 72) features target style golf in a spectacular setting. This is challenging to all levels of golfers, rewarding accuracy rather than power.

The new course, Campo Europa (par 71), is not only dramatic, but will be easier for the average golfer. There are generous fairways and the greens are slightly larger than the other two courses.

10. El Chaparral

The reopened El Chaparral Golf Course (par 72) runs through a vast number of matured trees and vegetation. It is a spectacular course with wide and varied fairways set in a leafy forest.

The holes are varied but all are surrounded by the indigenous vegetation of the Mediterranean.
The beautiful clubhouse with restaurant and bar is of a very high standard and has a large patio area overlooking the course and indeed out to sea.

11. Miraflores

Miraflores has a purpose-built, floodlit two storey driving range and video analysis. This is an 18 hole par 71 course that opened for play in 1990.

Miraflores has undulating fairways and elevated greens, and are maintained in lush splendor throughout the year with the water supplied from three artificial water holes which come into play on four holes.

Capobino Golf Course

12. Cabopino

Cabopino Golf Course is a very scenic, hilly golf course with lots of the areas original pines. It is one of the shorter courses on the coast but it is still a challenge. The greens are large and in excellent condition. Please note that buggies are obligatory on this course on this par 71 course.

13. Santa Maria

Santa Maria Golf Course is considered one of the best on the coast and each hole has its own character. Beautiful fairways follow the natural contours of the river bed and offer a challenging round of golf.

The 18-hole course (par 70) offers players a challenging game with a view of both the mountains and the Mediterranean.    

14. Marbella Golf and Country Club

Marbella Golf and Country Club is a very exciting course with the use of the rolling Andalucian hillside providing an enjoyable but testing round for players of all abilities.

The 18 hole par 72 course has gently undulating fairways that meander between the olive groves. There are also several lakes which must be negotiated. Bunkers abound which offer protection around most greens. The rough here can also prove difficult.

15. Santa Clara

Santa Clara Golf Course is set in a 360 acre estate and is in perfect condition for such a new course. Besides the huge river, which swirls across the whole golf course, there are plenty of lakes and spectacular elevated greens.

Water comes into play on many holes and there are bunkers protecting most of the greens. This is a challenging par 71 course for all levels of golfer.

Rio Real Golf Course

16. Rio Real

Rio Real Golf Course is one of the oldest courses on the coast. It is named after the river creek that meanders through the course. This course blends naturally with the outstanding beauty of its location.

It is situated in a beautiful valley between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains where the Real River crosses the course several times. The course, despite being flat, is not an easy 18 hole par 72 course.

17. Aloha

Aloha Golf Course is a private club that allows visitors. It is noted for its tricky greens that can make or break a round. The course is built on land originally known as 'Finca del Angel'. This is an 18 hole, par 72 course.

It features well maintained undulating fairways which on the whole are mostly wide although trouble is easily found if you stray either side.     

18. Royal Las Brisas

Las Brisas Golf Course is one of the oldest and most respected courses in the area. This course includes numerous water hazards with ten artificial lakes fed by two streams.
The greens, which are mostly raised, are amply protected by bunkers and the imported Bermuda grass fairways are always in the finest condition.

This is a par 68 course.

19. Los Naranjos

Los Naranjos Golf Course is a course of two halves. The front nine has rolling, wide fairways, while the back nine is flatter and tighter as it's played through the beautiful orange groves which give the course its name.

Los Naranjos is a par 72 course. It is always in fantastic condition and is a highly recommended course to play in the Costa del Sol.

La Quinta Golf course

20. La Quinta

La Quinta Golf Course offers 27 holes (par 72) of the most popular holes on the coast. The beautiful landscape and near perfect on course conditions make playing here a most enjoyable experience.

La Quinta is located on top of the hills overlooking the Marbella golf valley. The course is a technically demanding course with narrow, sloping fairways and plenty of hazards to negotiate before reaching the fast, tricky to read greens.       

21. Los Arqueros

Los Arqueros Golf Course in the Rhonda hills, is a challenging course set among some fantastic scenery and has lovely scenic views all the way down to the Mediterranean Sea.

This is one of the most tranquil and stunning settings to be found on the coast. Accuracy and direction rather than length are the key factors in producing a good round.
This par 71 course has three lakes supplied by the nearby Rio Verde.       

22. Guadalmina

Guadalmina Golf Course is the second oldest golf club on the coast. The South Course is an 18 holes, par 72 and is the most challenging with wide fairways winding between shady trees.

The North Course is an 18 holes, par 72 course and is less of a test than the South Course but features more water hazards and trees to make for an entertaining round. The fairways are wide and undulating so you can go with a driver off the tee.

23. Monte Mayor

Monte Mayor Golf Course is a spectacular golf course set in a high mountain valley. Every hole is not only challenging but provides some breath taking scenery.

The fairways meander through the mountain valley, making it a very hilly par 71 course, with ravines, gullies, thick vegetation and general uneven terrain. Add some water hazards and possible windy conditions and this target golf style course becomes very difficult.

Marbella Resort Golf Course

24. Marbella Resort

Marbella Club Golf Resort (not to be confused with the Marbella Golf and Country Club) is situated in the Benahavis hills and is a magnificent course which demands precision and accuracy. It enjoys spectacular views of Gibraltar, the African coastline, the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding mountains.

This is a par 73 course which runs through cork oaks, pines and local indigenous plants and precise shots are needed to the large greens.       

25. Atalaya

Atalaya Golf Course has two courses in excellent condition with beautifully manicured fairways and greens. The Old Course has flat wide fairways whilst the New Course has slightly more slopes.

The Old Course is a par 72 course set in parkland of pine, olive and eucalyptus trees and offers wide fairways and fast elevated greens.

The New Course is a par 67 course and has a gentle slope to it that offers not only a deceptive challenge but some beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains.

26. El Paraiso

El Paraiso Golf Course is a very friendly club offering a challenge to players of all levels. The fairways are wide but the bordering heavy rough is punishing.

This is a par 71 course built on a hilly terrain in the Paraiso Valley. The course winds its way around two lakes and is traversed by streams. As well as the heavy rough running along the fairways there are hundreds of trees and strategically placed bunkers.

Los Flamingos Golf Course

27. Los Flamingos

Los Flamingos Golf Course is a par 71 course which is a relatively new course and offers a fair challenge to golfers from all tee positions.

This is a beautiful course set in a lovely part of the coast and offers a challenging and enjoyable round of golf. Los Flamingos golf club is located in a beautiful enclave of Marbella with breath-taking views of the Mediterranean, Africa and Gibraltar.

28. Estepona

Estepona is not the longest course but it has one of the longest holes in Spain. It sits in the foothills of Sierra Bermeja and follows the natural contours of the land. It is a lovely course with a friendly atmosphere.

It is an 18 hole, par 72 course. The fairways are wide and the greens are always in excellent shape. This is a pleasant, challenging course and is a good test with its narrow fairways.

29. La Duquesa

La Duquesa has 18 very entertaining holes that will give you the opportunity to enjoy a round of golf under the sun with breezes from the Mediterranean, and views out to North Africa and Gibraltar.

This is a par 72 course that offers large, wide fairways and is a reasonable challenge to golfers of all standards.

Valderrama Golf Course

30. Valderrama

Valderrama Golf Course is a world recognised course, especially after hosting the 1997 Ryder Cup. It is a part 72 cousr that provides a difficult test with cork trees and olive groves tightly lining the fairways with well placed bunkers and infamous water hazards. However, the manicured fairways and lightning fast greens make this course a must for any golfer.

Valderrama has 18 holes which are played over a challenging and quite beautiful terrain.

31. Almenara

Almenara Golf Course is a par 72 course which has 27 holes winding their way through natural parkland surrounded by pine and cork trees. As well as the surrounding parkland there are several streams and a lake to make this a testing course with stunning views.

Whichever hole you are on there is always something interesting to test your ability. The course has beautiful views to the Almenara Hills and the Mediterranean.

32. San Roque

The San Roque has two courses. The Old Course is a par 72 course with its light fairways lined with mature trees and demands straight accurate driving. There are strategic bunkers placed with water hazards that need to be avoided.

The New Course is also a par 72 course which was designed to be a real challenge for the low handicappers but also playable and enjoyable for the high. As well as water hazards guarding four greens there are over one hundred bunkers.

Royal Sotogrande Golf Course

33. Royal Sotogrande

Sotogrande Golf Course is a mature and beautiful, par 72 course with lots of trees, bunkers and water.

The Bermuda grass has been imported to make sure that the fairways are always in the finest condition, and the greens are excellent. There is very little rough, but beware, the architect has strategicaly placed many bunkers and water hazards making it a challenge for all levels of golfer.

34. Alcaidesa

Alcaidesa Golf Course is the closes you will get to a links course in Andalusia, hugging the Mediterranean and offering fantastic views of Gibraltar and Morocco. It is the western most golf course on the Costa del Sol with four holes running beside the beach where there is no escaping the silence.

It is not all low-lying, there are some windswept heights offering some different challenges. The hilly par 71 course with wide fairways are bordered by gorse and heather, catching any wayward shots, with immaculate greens that are not too large or tricky.

Doña Julia Golf Course

35. Doña Julia

Dona Julia Golf Course is located in Casares and has matured well for a new course. It offers a well designed layout for all levels of players.

The par 71 course has two very different layouts, being suitable for any type of player; the first 9 holes are longer and more difficult, winding between indigenous trees, lakes and rivers while the other 9 are more manageable, having a gentle incline, and being within close proximity to the sea. An undoubted challenge for professionals as well as low handicappers.

36. Calanova

Calanova has been designed using its natural surroundings beautifully so that the medium handicapped players will find it a pleasure, yet challenging. There are strategically placed bunkers and lakes on the varied fairway layouts and many unusually shaped greens.

This course is a great addition to the Costa del Sol with its green and tranquil setting, just 5 minutes from La Cala village, is a joy to play. This is a new 18hole, par 72 course

Costa del Sol Golf Cursus

Er zijn nu meer dan 60 Costa del Sol Golfbanen die zich uitstrekken van Sotogrande in het westen tot de minder bekende Velez Malaga in het oosten.
Ze hebben allemaal één ding gemeen - het fantastische, zonnige en droge klimaat waardoor golfers het hele jaar door kunnen spelen.
Voor diegenen die gewend zijn om golf te spelen in het koude en het natte van een Noord-Europese winter, zal een dag spelen aan de Costa de Sol een echte luxe zijn.
