Nerja

Nerja on the Costa del Sol

Nerja (pronounced Nerga) has not suffered from the effects of urbanization and massive construction as on the western side of Malaga. Visitors to this relaxed town can still enjoy typical streets and squares of what was once a fishing village. Nevertheless, you will find a full range of amenities for leisure and nightlife. Especially in the summer, the city is very lively with lots of bars and nightclubs around the old city.
In contrast to the long and wide beaches of the western Costa del Sol, see, because of its proximity to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, charming coves and wild cliffs with rich seabed which is fantastic for diving. Nerja is known for its beautiful coastline, where the mountains and the sea merge into the impressive cliffs of Maro.
Things to do in Nerja
The two most famous sights of Nerja are the
"Balcony of Europe" and the caves of Nerja. A short
walk from the old town is the Balcon de Europa, a
beautiful vantage point that is enclosed by two
sheltered beaches. It is with its panoramic views of
the Mediterranean Sea, a favorite spot for many
visitors. From there to the left starts a wooden
boardwalk along the winding cliffs with lush vegetation.



But Nerja is probably more famous for the caves of Nerja. The caves, called the "natural cathedral of the Costa del Sol" is located 750 meters from the shoreline on a hill in the Sierra de Almijara Mountains, about 200 meters above sea level. The cavity open to the public has an area of about 140,000 square meters, with a maximum length of 700 meters. Only a third of the rooms are open to tourists and the estimated duration of the visit to this area in the caves of Nerja is about 45 minutes. Another part of the cave is accessible to smaller groups of visitors dedicated to speleological tourism.

Nightlife in Nerja
There are plenty of restaurants in Nerja, bars and nightclubs open until early in the morning, live music venues and for lovers karaoke bars. But the main area to go out, especially in the summer months, remains in and around the Plaza Tutti Frutti.



Nerja Beaches = also rocky beaches (OK for snorkelers)
The town of Nerja has more than a dozen beaches, it is one of the municipalities with most beaches on the Costa del Sol. Nerja has several beaches including in particular those of Burriana, Calahonda, El Salon, La Torrecilla and Playazo.
